To celebrate Literacy Week and Book Week all families received a brochure highlighting the wonderful Literacy events and programs in our school.
A brochure has been compiled to bring you news and information about literacy at our school. This highlights some of the wonderful events and programs we are running in our school.
these include:
Premiers' Reading Challenge:
The Challenge promotes the importance of reading among students in Victorian schools and encourages families to be more involved with supporting children’s reading in and beyond school. In 2013, young children and their parents are encouraged to join in the magic of discovering books through the Challenge.
National Simultaneous:
National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. It is an event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy using an Australian children's book. This year we all enjoyed reading The Wrong Book by Nick Bland. All grades participated in the story time and many grades also enjoyed art and craft activities related to the book.
Book Week:
Book Week is the longest running children's festival in Australia. The dates for Book Week 2013 will be Saturday 17th – Friday 23rd August. Book of the Year will be announced on 16th August 2013. Each year, many schools spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers develop activities and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading. The theme in 2013 is... Read Across the Universe. Our whole school activity this year is a dress up day on the 20th of August. A note with more information will be sent home soon.
Literacy Week:
During Literacy Week all grades were involved in many and varied activities. Younger children read with their buddies. Others made some very creative dioramas and other crafts. Many grades wrote poems, descriptive pieces and picture story books. Some took part in storytelling and we even had book swaps. Many literacy activities were highlighted during this week. Some samples and photos of these events are on display in our library.
